“YushinDaiko; a Japanese American Taiko Group” is a taiko group that does more than just play taiko. In adding Japanese dance, vocals, comedic routine, and Fue (Japanese flute), they create performances that entertain in a variety of ways and yet still reflect their Japanese heritage and their Japanese American experiences. To promote a better understanding and appreciation for taiko, all members of YushinDaiko must learn some Japanese vocabulary, some Chado (tea ceremony), a bit of Japanese and Japanese American History and traditions (and the differences thereof), and have some Japanese cultural arts exposure. All members must attend 2 Tea Gatherings (Chakai) per year in addition to learning some pertinent Japanese language.
“YushinDaiko; a Japanese American Taiko Group” plays a varied repertoire which includes 3 signature pieces; “Kojo no Tsuki”, which incorporates a song written by Taki Rentaro with lyrics by Doi Bansui; “Myooshin” written in collaboration with Stanley Morgan of “MoGan Daiko” (Tucson, AZ), and “Ocha”, which sets a Tea Ceremony Presentation to taiko rhythms.
Their most prestigious performance to date had been Governor Gary Locke’s First Inaugural Ball, but that was equaled in July, 2004 by the performance at the National Governor’s Association Annual Meeting, held in Seattle.
